Positions in Experimental/Behavioral Economics

The FCE at UFM has a brand new, state-of-the-art Experimental Economics Laboratory with capacity for 32 subjects and facilities for double-blind payment of subjects. The Lab offers support for running experiments and can offer programming support to facilitate developing software for experiments.

We have several open positions and are looking for young talented experimental / behavioral economists to build our human capacity and become a leading center of experimental economics.

Open Positions

Lecturer / Assistant Professor in Experimental / Behavioral Economics (2)

Candidates must demonstrate capacity for first-rate undergraduate instruction and the potential for high-quality research using experimental methods. Excellent personal skills and an ability to contribute to collaborative research projects are also essential for this position. Candidates will have a relevant PhD, or be close to finishing their PhD (outstanding ABDs will be considered if there is a reasonable expectation of completion by September 2010). Spanish language skills are desired but not required.

The teaching load is three courses per year, and the FCE provides TA’s for every course to ease the burden of teaching. Teaching topics vary and may include core economics courses, intermediate/advanced economic courses for undergraduates, quantitative methods and other courses in the candidate's field(s) of specialization. Although instruction usually takes place in Spanish, some classes can be taught in English.

Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a non-tenure-track position (the university does not operate under the traditional tenure system). Nevertheless, candidates are expected to have an active research agenda that leads to quality publications, and at UFM they will have the time and resources to do so.

Post Doc & Doctoral Fellowships in Experimental / Behavioral Economics

UFM is offering recent PhD’s and outstanding PhD candidates (at the dissertation stage) the opportunity to visit the Experimental Economics Lab and the Facultad de Ciencias Economicas (FCE) for a semester or a full year. The aim of the fellowship is to establish links with upcoming scholars at top universities around the world using experimental economics for their research.

The successful candidate would be expected to conduct experimental research while visiting, present a seminar(s) on their research, lead a Socratic seminar with undergraduates, and interact with faculty members and students during their visit. Spanish language skills are desired but not required.

UFM will cover the cost of a return economy airfare to Guatemala, provide a competitive stipend to cover living expenses. Additional resources (larger stipend plus supplementary research funds) are available for candidates capable of high quality instruction (in either English or Spanish) for undergraduate courses in economics or quantitative methods (math, statistics, econometrics, etc.).

Visiting Professors and Short Term Visiting Positions

We are also interested in hosting faculty interested in short-term (1-3 month) visits, longer term visits (i.e. spending a year while on sabbatical), or recurring visits (i.e. spending between 3-6 months a year). There is greater flexibility for these positions. Conditions can be discussed and there is greater scope for accommodating to special requirements.

About US

Universidad Francisco Marroquín (UFM) is a private university committed to excellence.  A sprawling campus nestled in an arboretum in the heart of Guatemala City makes UFM ideally suited for research and studying. (For more information on UFM please visit https://www.ufm.edu/cms/es/at-a-glance).

The FCE at UFM hosts the leading programs in Guatemala on economics, business (with minors in finance, marketing and entrepreneurship), and (starting in 2009) a BS in Entrepreneurial Engineering

UFM offers a high degree of flexibility and low bureaucratic barriers (which may facilitate running non-standard experiments). In addition, Guatemala offers a relatively easy access to a diverse and unusual pool of experimental subjects –especially for running controlled experiments in the field: Guatemala is host to a multicultural and multiethnic population (there are 22 different mayan groups, in addition to ladinos and garífunas) concentrated in a small geographic area, which would make it easier and less expensive to run experiments where culture, language or ethnicity are expected to play an important role.
